By mid-July the Mid-atlantic summer heat feels relentless. My remedy? A waterfall hike in the mountains! As a 9-5 professional in Baltimore, I need to escape the city and feel some cool waterfall mist on my face. Good news, there are a ton of seriously cool waterfalls just a drive away.
In this post, I’m sharing my favorite waterfall hikes across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia that are perfect for a weekend adventure. These mid-Atlantic waterfalls will satisfy your cravings for misty cascades, scenic views and even some swimming holes. Get ready to hit some of the best waterfalls hikes near DC and Baltimore!

Waterfall hikes are the coolest way to cool off. That cooling sensation isn’t just physical, it’s deeply calming, too. The rushing water and misty air create a sensory experience that helps you feel more grounded, present, and clear-headed.
And here’s the science behind that soothing mist: waterfalls release negative ions into the air, tiny particles that can help reduce stress, boost mood, and even improve energy levels. Coolest Waterfall Hikes in Maryland for Summer
Cunningham Falls – Maryland
Location: Thurmont, MD
Trail Name: Upper Falls Trail
Length: 1.2 miles out and back
Difficulty: Easy
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- This is the tallest waterfall in Maryland at 78′
- One of the best summer hikes near DC and in the mid-atlantic.
My Tips:
- On the weekends, get there early to avoid crowds.
- The parking lot for the falls can fill up. You can also park at the lake and walk over.
Muddy Creek Falls – Maryland
Location: Oakland, MD
Trail Name: Swallow Falls Canyon Trail
Length: 1.1 mile loop
Difficulty: Easy
Pet-Friendly: No
Why It’s Worth It:
- So many reasons! This park is always on my summer bucketlist.
- Swim at Muddy Creek Falls, or hike down the trail to swim at Swallow Falls. The water is so crisp and clean. There is plenty of room to swim.
- This is my favorite place to beat the heat in the mid-atlantic
My Tips:
- Get there early to get a parking spot.
- You should plan to go swimming- so bring a suit and a towel.
- There are clean bathrooms at the parking lot, and on weekends there is a popcorn stand.
Kilgore Falls – Maryland
Location: Pylesville, MD
Trail Name: Kilgore Falls Trail
Length: .7 miles out and back
Difficulty: Easy
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- There is a small swimming hole- perfect for the little kiddos.
- It’s also not far from Baltimore.
My Tips:
- On the weekends, get there early to avoid crowds.
- In the summer, a permit is required due to crowds. Visit MD DNR to get one.
The Best Waterfall Hikes in Virginia for Summer
White Oak Canyon Falls – Virginia
Location: Syria, VA/ Shenandoah National Park
Trail Name: Lower White Oak Falls via Whiteoak Canyon Trail
Length: 2.9 miles out and back
Difficulty: Challenging in spots- slippery, steep elevation
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- The absolutely most crystal clear water to swim in!
- Hike along the stream and hear peacefully running water the whole day.
- Stunning scenic viewpoints if you hike the whole trail.
- Summer is one of my favorite times of year to visit Shenandoah.

- Shenandoah National Park charges a fee to enter. Visit https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/fees.htm for more info.
Dark Hollow Falls – Virginia
Location: Shenandoah National Park
Trail Name: Dark Hollow Falls
Length: 1.6 miles out and back
Difficulty: Moderate because of slippery rocks and incline
Pet-Friendly: No
Why It’s Worth It:
- One of the coolest waterfall views in Shenandoah, in my opinion.
My Tips:
- This is one of the most popular trails in Shenandoah, so get there early!
- There is a fee to access the park, unless you have an America the Beautiful pass, which I fully recommend!
- You can park in the dedicated lot, or park at the Harry F Byrd Visitor Center across the street
- The Visitor Center has flush bathrooms, and a neat history tour.
Great Falls– Virginia
Location: Great Falls, VA
Trail Name: River Trail Loop
Length: 4.6 mile loop
Difficulty: Moderate. Some parts are paved, other parts are very rocky
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- Incredible views of the raging falls
- This waterfall is a can’t miss! It’s absolutely huge- hence the name
My Tips:
- This park can get crowded due to it being a popular summer hike near DC- get there early!
- The trails starts at the Visitor Center which has flush bathrooms and a small concession stand.
- You can NOT swim here. You wouldn’t make it- trust me.
- There is a fee to enter the park, so bring your America the Beautiful pass, which I fully recommend!
The Coolest Waterfall Hikes in West Virginia for Summer
Blackwater Falls – West Virginia
Location: Davis, VA
Trail Name: Blackwater Falls Trail
Length: .4 miles out and back (A very short boardwalk path to the falls)
Difficulty: Easy
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- In my option, this is the most picturesque waterfall in the area.
My Tips:
- The parking lot for the falls is relatively large. I’ve always found a spot.
- The bathrooms are pretty clean at the trailhead.
- The souvenir shop has some really neat West Virginia stuff- T shirts, camping gear, stickers (my fav).
- This park makes a great weekend getaway. There’s so much to see in this area!
Elakala Falls – West Virginia
Location: Davis, WV
Trail Name: Elakala Trail
Length: < 1 mile
Difficulty: Moderate due to slippery rocks
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- Same as above, this is located at Blackwater Falls State Park, so you can pair them in the same adventure.
- A beautiful, moody, serene view of the falls.
- You can get up close and personal with this waterfall, walking right up to the base.
My Tips:
- Be very careful climbing down to see the falls.
- There is a whole network of trails around this waterfall. You can just hike to the falls, or you can do the loop to see the edge of the State Park.
- The trailhead starts at the Blackwater Lodge- so the parking lot is huge.
- Bathrooms are clean.
- Grab lunch or dinner afterwards at the Lodge!
Cathedral Falls – West Virginia
Location: Gauley Bridge, WV
Trail Name: Cathedral Falls
Length: < 1 mile – You can see the falls from the road.
Difficulty: Easy
Pet-Friendly: Yes
The Best Waterfall Hikes in Pennsylvania for Summer
Ricketts Glen – Pennsylvania
Location: Sweet Valley, PA
Trail Name: Falls Trail
Length: 6.9 mile loop
Difficulty: Challenging due to incline, rocky terrain, slippery sections
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- You will see 22 free-flowing waterfalls on this trail. That’s not a typo! 22!
- I consider this the best waterfall trail in Pennsylvania
My Tips:
- This trail can get crowded due to its popularity. Get there early!
- Wear sturdy hiking boots to avoid slipping
- Take a dip at the lake afterwards!
Cucumber Falls – Pennsylvania
Location: Ohiopyle, PA
Trail Name: Great Gorge Trail
Length: 3.6 miles out and back
Difficulty: Moderate due to the rocks and some incline
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- Impressive views of the single-drop falls
- Boardwalk path over the Youghiogheny River
My Tips:
- There is also an option to drive to the Falls. The dedicated lot fills up quick, though.
- Climb out onto the rocks below the falls for a peaceful snack stop.
- Make a day of it- Stop in Ohiopyle before and after for a cute mountain town adventure. You can even book a rafting tour on the river.

Bushkill Falls – Pennsylvania
Location: Bushkill, PA
Trail Name: Bushkill Falls Red and Blue Trail
Length: 1.7 mile loop
Difficulty: Moderate- according to Alltrails
Pet-Friendly: Yes
Why It’s Worth It:
- Amazing views of the falls
- Boardwalk path
My Tips:
- I’ll admit, I haven’t been here – yet. I’ve been nearby, but never made it over there.
- After some consideration, I decided to keep it on the list because I’ve heard such great things. I can’t do a “best of” article and not include the best.
- I’ll update this section once I actually see the falls!
Tips for Waterfall Hiking in Summer
Before you hit the trail to these epic waterfalls, do a little planning. It goes a long way! Especially when its hot and humid, some tips can help save the day. The goal is to stay safe, comfortable and hydrated all season.
Pack for Summer
In the summer, be sure to pack extra hydration, sun screen, and gear that keeps you cool. I always bring a refillable water bottle, snacks with protein, and a Buff band in case I want to put something cool around my neck. Don’t forget some waterproof hiking boots with excellent traction. Wet rocks can be very slippery!
Go Early or Late
For cooler temps and fewer crowds, hit the trail early in the morning or before sunset.
Stay Safe Around Water
Waterfall trails are beautiful but can be deceptively tricky. Watch your step near wet rocks, especially at overlooks or water crossings. Stay on marked trails and obey all park rules.
Leave No Trace
Waterfall areas are fragile ecosystems. Carry out all trash, avoid picking plants, and keep noise levels low so wildlife can thrive. If you pack it in, pack it out—even an orange peel or granola bar wrapper.
