In the northeastern region of Pennsylvania is one of my favorite Mid-Atlantic gems. Ricketts Glen State Park is well-known for it’s impressive waterfalls, beautiful scenery, and challenging trails. It is a bucketlist adventure for outdoorsy road trippers, campers and day-hikers. If you’re searching for an unforgettable getaway on the east coast, Ricketts Glen State Park is the spot!
Why Ricketts Glen State Park Is So Special
The star attraction for this park is the iconic waterfalls. This park is best known for the Falls Trail where you can see 21 waterfalls on one trail. Yes, you read that correctly! The hike takes you down into the deep gorge along the path of the Kitchen Creek. There are so many cascading waterfalls that you can see up close and huge single drop falls that you can feel the mist on your face. Its a surreal experience to say the least. My personal favorite is Gondola Falls, an impressive 94 ft waterfall.
Beyond waterfalls, the park offers:
- Multiple hiking trails for all skill levels
- Camping and picnic areas
- A scenic lake with swimming in the summer
- A concession stand and plenty of parking
- Bathrooms at most trailheads and at the lake
Plan to stop at the lake after your hike. It is so refreshing after a long day on the trail. They have concessions like hot dogs, sandwiches and ice cream!
When is the BEST time to visit?
The best time to visit Ricketts Glen is late spring through summer. Springtime is the perfect time of year for a waterfall hike because the falls will be raging after the winter snow has melted away. Summer is also a great time to revel in the lush greenery of Pennsylvania.
Autumn is a great time for a visit to Ricketts Glen State Park. Seeing the park covered in fall colors is pure magic.
My Tip: Consider visiting on the weekdays, or during shoulder season to avoid crowds. Trust me, having a quiet trail will bring the best vibes!
How to Get to There
Ricketts Glen State Park is within driving distance from several major east coast cities, making it a perfect choice for a weekend getaway or day-hike.
Philadelphia: ~2.5 hours
New York City: ~3 hours
Washington, DC / Baltimore: ~4 hours (traffic depending)
I treated it as a weekend getaway—and it was 100% worth the drive.
My Tip: The Lake Rose Trailhead is a popular spot to park, but be sure to check for any road closures before heading out.
The Best Trails in Ricketts Glen State Park
If you’re here for the waterfalls (and you absolutely should be!), The Falls Trail is the main event.
Falls Trail Loop:
- 7.2 miles | Difficult
- This loop takes you past 21 waterfalls, through steep, rocky terrain. It’s a workout, but the views are worth it.
- My Tip: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots!
Looking for something a little more chill?
Evergreen Trail:
- 1 mile | Easy
- This peaceful loop winds through evergreen forest and offers a great view of Adams Falls—a beautiful option for beginners or those short on time.

There is little to no cell service in this area- Let someone know where you will be hiking, bring a printed map or download a map to your phone.
How hard is the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen?
The trail can be difficult, with steep inclines, and rocky stairs. It can get a little slippery in spots too. I recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots. The views are worth the challenge.
What time does the parking lot fill up?
I was there at 12 pm on a Sunday and the lot at Lake Rose Trailhead still had plenty of parking.
What are the hours for the concession stand?
The hours change depending on weather and season. Contact the park office for facility seasons and hours. concessions are usually open daily in the summer season, from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., weather permitting.
What is the entrance fee?
Pennsylvania State Parks are usually free to enter! There is a fee for camping.
How bad are the mosquitos at Ricketts Glen?
I saw a lot of little flies, gnats and a couple mosquitos on my hike. Summer can get pretty bad in this area, especially when you’re camping. I would recommend bringing bug spray.
