The Mid-Atlantic region has been my home for my entire life. With Baltimore as my home base, I spend most of my weekends venturing out of the city to local parks. I love exploring the sandy beaches of the Chesapeake and the rolling hills of the Appalachian Mountains. I know the best places that this region has to offer and I’m excited to share it with you!

Watkins Glen State Park, New York

Located in upstate New York, Watkins Glen State Park is a must-see! This park is known for its stunning gorges and iconic waterfalls. The park is surprisingly accessible as it’s just a short walk from downtown Watkins Glen, in the heart of the Finger Lakes. As you hike the main trail through the gorge, you will be led to multiple breathtaking waterfalls. The trail goes behind, under and over waterfalls as you hike deeper into the canyon. There are stone bridges, dramatic tunnels, and staircases that make this park a unique destination. To plan your trip the Finger Lakes, read more here. I promise, this place will leave you in awe!

Ricketts Glen State Park, Pennsylvania

Ricketts Glen State Park is another must-see in rural Pennsylvania. This park is known for its impressive collection of 22 waterfalls on one trail. (Yes, 22!) The Falls trail leads you down into the lush forest, past so many waterfalls and serene places to relax. On this trek, you’ll be impressed at the beauty of Pennsylvania, and you’ll be breaking a sweat. The incline is no joke! Also, don’t forget to bring your swimsuit. After your hike, head over to the lake to take a dip and enjoy the sun. There is a concession stand with ice cream, snacks and drinks! Ricketts Glen State Park is a beautiful, unique destination that is sure to impress!

Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania

Located in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, Ohiopyle State Park is the adventure lover’s dream. There are so many things to do in this small town and park along the Youghiogheny River (Locally known as the You River). The park is famous for its whitewater rafting tours in some of the best rapids on the east coast. There are also many hiking trails offering stunning views and beautiful waterfalls. Popular hikes are the Ferncliff Trail, with amazing views of the town, and the Great Gorge Trail to Cucumber Falls. Don’t forget to check out the town after your hike! Ohiopyle State Park is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking adventure and relaxation in the great outdoors.

Assateague State Park, Maryland

Assateague State Park has a special place in my heart! I love seeing the wild horses, and I love that this park is in my home state of Maryland. What makes this place so unique is that it’s located on a barrier island on the Atlantic coast. Wild horses roam freely here and they are surprisingly easy to see! They can be found walking along the beaches, marshlands, or even just standing in the road!  The park’s beaches are so beautiful. You can spend the day lounging in the sand, padding through the marshes, or hiking the diverse trails. You can also book a campsite for a really unique camping experience. Read more about that here!  I fully recommend it. This park also offers some of the best sunsets in the region! The combination of wildlife and scenic beauty makes Assateague a must-visit destination.

Lost River State Park, West Virginia

Lost River State Park made the list because this is really a hidden gem! This place can’t be missed if you are passing through West Virginia. This park is named after the Lost River, a unique river that disappears underground and re-emerges miles away. The appeal of this park is the 20 miles of hiking trails and the breathtaking views. This park provides many unique trails, camping and horseback riding tours. Hike to the historic Cranny Crow overlook to get your photo on the famous Almost Heaven swing while gazing at the stunning view. Lost River State Park is the ideal destination for hikers or anyone seeking some tranquility.

Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia

Blackwater Falls State Park is one of my favorite places on the planet! I had to include it in this list and you can read more about it here! This park is known for its iconic Blackwater Falls, a 57 ft cascade into the deep gorge. There is surprisingly easy access to the falls, with a boardwalk path leading to multiple overlooks. You can also explore more of the park including Elakala Falls, Pendleton Point or Lindy Point. If you are planning on being here in Autumn, you will be so stunned with the scenery. This place is absolutely magical when the leaves start to change. They also offer an array of camping options with campsites and cabins. Blackwater Falls is the perfect place for a day trip, or a weekend getaway.
