Adventures to Look Forward to in Winter

I’ve always loved the outdoors, but I’ll be the first to admit: I’m not a fan of being cold. For years, I struggled with finding the motivation to get outside during the winter, convinced that the season was better spent indoors with a blanket and a book. But a few years ago, I decided to make it a priority to embrace winter adventure, and I’m here to tell you—it’s possible to have fun outside, even when it’s freezing!

With the right layering and bundling-up techniques, you can stay warm and enjoy the beauty that winter has to offer. Winter landscapes are stunningly serene, and there are so many unique activities worth trying. Here are my top picks for winter adventures in the Mid-Atlantic that are sure to get you out there, discovering the magic of the season.

Winter Hiking

Winter hiking may sound cold at first, but with the right layers, it can be one of the most rewarding ways to experience the season. Staying warm and dry is all about bundling up in layers that trap heat but still let you move freely on the trail.

Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin, add a warm insulating layer like fleece or down, and finish with a waterproof, wind-resistant jacket to shield you from the elements. Don’t forget essentials like gloves, a cozy hat, a fleece-lined scarf, and wool socks to keep your extremities warm. And of course, a good pair of insulated, waterproof boots will keep your feet dry and stable on snowy or icy trails. I love my Merrells!

In the winter, I also like to carry rechargeable hand warmers for those extra cold days and spikes for my boots to navigate icy terrain.

I’ve found that once you get moving, you warm up really quick. Chances are, you’ll be removing layers in no time. An added bonus for winter hiking, is that you are more likely to have the snowy landscapes and icy waterfalls all to yourself! The trails are a lot less busy in the colder months.

Do I have you convinced? Check out my blog post on The Best Winter Hikes in Maryland to find scenic spots that are perfect for a winter adventure! These trails offer breathtaking winter landscapes that are well worth the chill.

Skiing

I’ll be honest with you, I’m not the biggest fan of skiing, but it can be so fun! Skiing is a fantastic way to make the most of snowy days. For those in the Mid-Atlantic, there are several great spots nearby, like Liberty Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania, Wisp Resort in Maryland, and Snowshoe in West Virginia, where you can find slopes for every skill level.

Snow Tubing and Sledding

My best winter days have been spent gliding down a hill on an inflatable tube with my friends. It’s so much fun, not too expensive and easy for everyone. Tubing and sledding are especially great for groups and families, as everyone can enjoy it together, no matter their skill level.

If you’re ready to zoom down a hill, there are some popular spots in the area.  Liberty Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania and Wisp Resort in Maryland offer well-maintained tubing lanes with conveyor lifts to bring you back up. Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia offers tubing and sledding in the winter, backdropped by the gorgeous Monongahela National Forest. Things I want to try this winter (2025)

Snowshoeing

I’ve had so many people recommend snowshoeing. I’m going to give it a try this year. Updates to follow!

Ways to Stay Cozy and Mindful

I feel like winter is urging us to slow down, embrace stillness, and practice mindfulness from your cozy couch. While the chilly weather might keep you indoors, it’s also an opportunity to start winter routines that promote well-being and relaxation. There are countless ways to enjoy a peaceful winter season. When your blanket and a warm cup of tea are calling your name, it’s time to slow down and embrace the coziness. Here are some of my favorite activities to help you unwind and keep the winter blues away when the temps drop.

Enjoying Hot Teas

Winter is the perfect season to indulge in herbal teas that offer both relaxation and wellness. Sipping on a warm cup of tea feels like a mini escape. It’s my favorite way to unwind. In fact, I’m sipping on tea while I write this!

If you’re interested in adding some relaxing teas to your winter routine, I’ve linked a few of my favorite brands below. Wrap up in a blanket, brew a cup, and enjoy a warm drink on a chilly day!

  • Chamomile is my go-to for calming my mind and easing into restful evenings.
  • Peppermint tea is a refreshing treat that clears your senses and sinuses.
  • For some warmth, ginger tea is fantastic for boosting immunity- something that you need in winter months!
  • One of my favorites is Lavender Lemonade tea which smells so nice, and also has some calming effects.

Journaling

Journaling is a great way to practice mindfulness and stay grounded, especially during colder months when we tend to spend more time indoors. I’ve found that setting aside just a few minutes each day to write can help clear my mind, process emotions, and focus on gratitude. Try starting your winter season with a journaling routine. It will help keep the winter blues away.

Joining a Gym with a Sauna or Hot Tub

This is a must for me in the winter! I joined a gym with a hot tub and sauna and it’s been a game-changer. The heat helps relax my muscles and gives me a much needed respite from the cold.

Many local gyms and wellness centers in the Mid-Atlantic region, such as Gold’s Gym and YMCA locations, have fantastic facilities that include both saunas and hot tubs, allowing you to unwind and recharge.

Hot Baths

Hot baths bring the vibes in the winter. They transform your bathroom into a personal spa retreat. Try adding some cozy wellness by adding essential oils, bath salts, bubbles, relaxing music and candles.

My personal routine includes a hot bath, bath bombs and a meditation podcast. Trust me, on frosty days, this will be the perfect way to spend your evening.

Ways to Stay Active During Winter

Winter might bring shorter days and colder nights, but it doesn’t have to put a damper on your fitness routine. For me, staying active in winter is essential. It helps keep my spirits up and keeps away the winter blues. I have a few workouts and activities that I reserve for winter time, so I get to look forward to this season every year. Here are a few ways to keep moving and make the most of the season.

Winter Jogging

Yes, I will run outside all year long! Sometimes the cold, crisp air is so refreshing and energizing. To stay comfortable jogging in winter, layering up is key. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm middle layer, and finish with a weather-resistant outer shell. Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and warm socks to keep extremities protected. With a little preparation, winter jogging can become your favorite fitness routine.

Indoor Swimming

I started swimming at an indoor pool a few years ago and I simply love it! The pools are usually heated, so its not too daunting to jump in. Swimming is the perfect winter cardio- its gentle on your joints, its great for heart health, and it strengthens muscles. Its also a great stress reliever and a great way to incorporate something different into your winter routine. I find it so peaceful to swim laps or just float there. Embracing indoor swimming can be a refreshing way to stay fit and keep the winter blues at bay.

Hot Yoga

Hot Yoga is the perfect winter activity. I find it so cozy and relaxing. Its perfect for loosening my achy muscles- sore from being cold all day. Many yoga centers in your area offer hot yoga classes, allowing you to get in a solid workout while staying warm. Yoga can also be extremely calming, which is essential in the winter months when stress levels may be high.

Dance Classes

I love taking dance classes in the winter. Its a great way to move your body, have some fun and meet new friends. Many dance studios and fitness centers offer Cardio Dance, Zumba, or Hip Hop classes all year long. Dancing isn’t just a fun workout, it also boosts your mood, which is much needed in winter. And the social aspect can make dance class feel less like a chore, and more like a fun night out. Check local gyms and studios to find a dance class near you!

Adding to Your Winter Routine

If you’re wondering when to start a new winter routine, the answer is NOW. Start planning your activities to stay ahead of the winter blues. Blending outdoor activities and cozy indoor moments, you can stay active and fulfilled all winter. Consider planning weekend outings now, like snowshoeing, or winter hikes. During the week, sprinkle some relaxing indoor activities into your routine like journaling or a warm bath. Adding workouts like swimming or yoga to your weekly exercise plan can have you feeling refreshed before the winter blues hit you.

Conclusion

Winter doesn’t have to be a season of frigid temps or feeling disconnected. With a little planning or mindfulness, you can rebrand winter into a time of cozy moments, growth, and adventure! Discover a new trail, try a new activity, or add some wellness to your week. There are countless ways to stay engaged and uplifted.
