If you’re looking for a more primitive West Virginia camping experience, you don’t want to miss the chance to camp in the wilderness of the National Forest. With dispersed camping, you can pitch your tent anywhere within the forest, as long as you follow Leave No Trace principles and adhere to US Forest Service regulations. There are specific areas that allow dispersed camping that can be found on the Forest Service site.
A favorite among campers is the Canaan Mountain backcountry, along the Allegheny Trail. The trail connects Blackwater Falls State Park with Canaan Valley State Park and has lots of day hikes to enjoy during your stay. The best part about dispersed West Virginia camping is that you’re not in a crowded campground, and you’ll have plenty of peace and quiet to enjoy the sounds of nature.
When you’re dispersed camping, it’s important to follow Leave No Trace principles, which basically means leaving the area as you found it. That means packing out all your trash, being mindful of your impact on the environment, and respecting the wildlife and other visitors.

Here, you’ll find a variety of cabins ranging from rustic to luxury, offering stunning views of the surrounding West Virginia mountains and valleys. Plus, the resort offers tons of amenities, including hiking trails, golf courses, a couple of restaurants, hot tub and a ski area. There’s something for everyone to enjoy here. I particularly enjoy the community fire pit- it’s a great place to meet fellow travelers.
Blackwater Falls State Park
Another favorite of mine is Blackwater Falls State Park cabins. You have the option of staying in a range of cabins, from rustic to luxury. I had the pleasure of staying here in late December. It was absolutely stunning! I woke up to falling snow and a herd of deer staring at me. These cabins are equipped with modern amenities like TV, WIFI, and a full kitchen. It’s definitely my favorite way to stay in the park. The cabins are close to the trails, so you can get an early start for a sunrise hike!

The list of amenities and activities is endless. You could really spend your entire trip here and never leave the property. The landscape around this resort is top tier- you can watch the sunrise over the Allegheny Mountains. And the hotel is a unique mix of luxury and history. It is a historic landmark that has been around since 1778 and has hosted 28 US Presidents, and counting. This resort is luxury at its finest!

From yurts and treehouses to glamping tents and eco-lodges, there are many unique stays to find. I always have luck doing a search on Airbnb for these types of places.
One standout option is the luxury yurts at Loves Way Village, located in the Potomac Highlands near Moorefield, WV. The spacious yurts feature comfortable beds, private hot tubs, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Plus, guests have access to amenities such as fire pits, volleyball courts and hiking trails. My favorite thing about the Loves Way Village is their events. They frequently offer yoga retreats, girls weekend retreats and couples retreats as a package. This is my favorite place to camp in West Virginia.

Take note of the amenities offered at each lodging option, such as Wi-Fi, kitchen facilities, and restaurant options. Pay attention to the hours of operation for shops and restaurants, as places tend to close early sometimes. A little preparation will help ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Cell Service:
Take note that this area of West Virginia has little cell service. I’ve noticed that the hotels and resorts tend to have service, while the camping options have none. Plan ahead to ensure you are ready for a digital detox!
