That’s a lie. I’ve definitely had the Sunday scaries.

Picture this: It’s 5pm on Sunday. I feel just as tired and exhausted as when I left work on Friday. Nothing got done all weekend, yet I also don’t feel relaxed. I’m dreading waking up Monday and facing a new week. Sound familiar? Yeah, I thought so. 

I’ve been told to use my weekends to relax. Binge watch Netflix. Doomscroll. Meal prep. Catch up on laundry. 

I tried doing that. I used my weekends to recover from the week and prepare for the next. Let me just be completely honest. That sucks. Seriously, when was the last time you watched TV for hours and actually felt good after?

I don’t want to use my weekends to be on a never ending hamster wheel of efficiency and productivity. I don’t want my life to revolve around my work week. I don’t want to live to work. I want it the other way around. 

I finally realized that I want to feel better. I want to actually live my life. When someone asks me what I like to do for fun, I want to actually have an answer!

Instead of using my free time to recover and prepare, I started doing small things to help reconnect with myself. I do things that fill up my cup. Things that make me feel like I am living, and not just on auto-pilot.

5 Easy Ways to Build Your Own Weekend Wellness Routine

Here’s what’s worked for me and what you can try, too.

1. Tidy Up My Space

You don’t need to do a deep clean or anything. Getting things a little organized makes me feel calm. I am deeply affected by my environment. If my house is messy, my mind is too. 

2. Move Your Body

I prefer a hike, but you do you. Swimming, walking or just stretching in your living room can make a huge difference.

3. Set a Sunday Night Ritual

Dim lights. Make tea. Journal. Read. Light a candle. Put your phone away. This signals your body that it’s safe to wind down.

4. Plan for the Week Ahead (Just a Little)

Review your goals, plan your workouts, outfits or meals. Don’t overdo it. This should feel supportive, not stressful.

5. Do One Thing That Is Just for YOU

Read a book. Paint. Walk by the water. Bake something. Whatever reminds you that you are a whole person, not just a worker bee.

Weekend Routine for Rest and Grounding

When I’m totally fried physically, mentally and emotionally I focus on a weekend routine for grounding and restoration.

I don’t force anything. I do what feels nourishing.

On weekends like this, if the weather’s good, I head to my favorite coffee shop. If I choose to stay in, I make a healthy, nourishing breakfast and do things that calm my nervous system.


This is my go-to weekend reset routine when I need to come back to myself and remember that rest is productive.

Rest + Grounding Weekend Plan

  • Nourishing meals (like this green smoothie using my favorite greens powder)
  • Coffee shop vibes
  • Hammock time. I’ve had this hammock for years and its so easy to set up.
  • A good book
  • A long, scenic drive
  • Swimming
  • Guided meditation (I love Kelly Smith on Spotify)
  • Calming face mask
  • Long shower
  • Netflix or something light
  • Creative playtime
  • Chamomile tea

Weekend Routine for a Reset

When life feels chaotic and my home looks like a tornado came through, I turn to a weekend of gentle structure. A good weekend routine is necessary. The goal isn’t to do everything. Just enough to feel grounded again.

  • Cleaned my backyard
  • Planted a garden
  • Organized my closet
  • Washed AND folded laundry
  • Wrote this article (woo!)

Weekend Routine for Adventure and Energy

When I need to shake things up, I lean into adventure weekends that light up my soul and boost my energy. I like to hike, paddle and see the most beautiful views on the east coast. These are the weekends where I feel truly alive.



My favorite weekend routine for energy includes:

  • A spontaneous day trip to a state park with a friend
  • A solo hike at Shenandoah
  • Paddleboarding at a new lake. I use this inflatable paddleboard that fits in my trunk and takes 10 minutes to set up.
  • Fishing off the Chesapeake Bay
  • Exploring small towns
  • A weekend road trip with my partner



Even a few hours outdoors can recharge you. You don’t need a big budget, just a desire to live your life fully.
