Trail Therapy: A Guide to Nature’s Healing Power

Your ticket to sanity.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the chaos of, well… everything? You’re not alone. Sometimes it feels like life keeps throwing curveballs and the stress is piling up. Well, you’re in for a treat because today we are diving into the concept of “Trail Therapy”. Let nature lend a helping hand to your mental health.

What is Trail Therapy?

This might sound like the newest self help buzzword, but not as fancy as it sounds. It’s a ticket to sanity when you’re feeling overwhelmed with life. Trail Therapy is all about strapping on your hiking boots, hitting the trail, and letting nature work its magic on your mind and soul. Of course, this can’t take the place of traditional psychotherapy. Paired together, you become an unstoppable force of wellness and health. Sounds great, right?

In this modern, post-covid life, it feels like stress and chaos are always an unwanted sidekick. Every time you read the news, or open a social media app, you are bombarded with uneasiness. In this world, it’s crucial to explore holistic approaches to mental health. You need this trick up your sleeve to keep thriving. Well, here it is! Trail Therapy heals not just your mind, but your body and soul too! Score!

Hiking Can be a Healing Tool

Hiking is more than a walk in nature; it’s a healing tool that mends the spirit and rejuvenates the soul. When I walk into the forest, I can feel the load on my shoulder lighten. I feel like I am able to breathe easier, and think clearer. Hiking isn’t just a journey through landscapes; it’s a journey within – a trail therapy session. It can be the perfect time to journal your thoughts- I like to use this trail journal on my hikes. *

Working Through Problems while Hiking

I was at the top of a mountain when I realized that I wanted to sell my house and move. I had lived in my house in the city for 10 years, but something felt off. While I loved the house and neighborhood, I felt like it was time to move on. I was getting tired of living in the city. I was tired of fighting for parking and hearing loud noises. I wanted to be closer to nature. I knew something was off, but I didn’t know what to do about it.

As I sat in the forest, everything became clear. It dawned on me that I should sell my house. It was a lightbulb moment. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I knew it would take some time. But at that moment, I knew I needed to start the process. While walking among the trees, there is no choice but to be honest with myself. It’s only in that clarity in the woods that I had this profound revelation.

Human’s Connection to Nature

Mindfulness in Nature

Mindfulness isn’t just for yoga class, meditation retreats and massages by candlelight. It’s the act of shutting off the constant mental gymnastics going through your mind. The bombardment of mental to-do lists, all of the analysis of your past mistakes, and worries about the future can be flipped off like a light switch. Mindfulness is like pushing pause in your mind. Hiking is the magic pause button.

In a world that seems like it’s in a constant perma-crisis, it’s important to find a calm in a chaos. The antidote to our crazy, stressed out lives is mindfulness. Being present and embracing the now can calm the mind and turn off the stress. Like stopping to smell the roses. Literally.

Social Connection

Solo-hiking, or with a group: both have their own magic. Solo-hiking is like having a date with yourself. It can lead to self-discovery, increased confidence and peaceful solitude. Hiking with a group can be so fun with shared happiness, the comfort of community and long venting sessions. Both can increase emotional wellbeing and be your trail therapy.

Solo-hiking can be the ultimate trail therapy. Nothing clears your mind like hours of quiet soul searching. As your boots hit the dirt, your mind starts to unravel your thoughts. The trail becomes your sounding board. With each step, you get lost in self-discovery. Nature can be your therapist, listening without judgment. Your inner voice becomes your biggest cheerleader as you conquer the trail alone.

Alternatively, group hiking can be more of a group therapy session. It’s a celebration of joy in nature, collective strength and building connections. There’s something about conquering the trail with your tribe that strengthens you. Sharing the burdens of life with your crew can offer new insight and lighten the load. Laughter at each switchback and mutual appreciation of nature can lift the spirits of any hiker.

Digital Detox

Life can feel like an endless stream of notifications, beeps and screen time. Our devices have become tethered to our hands, and with them comes stressors. It’s time for a break! Lets face it, the urge to respond to every text, scroll through social media and check our email is very real. We need something to pull us away from the screen and into nature.

A disconnection from our devices is like a breath of fresh air for our minds. Suddenly, you notice the beauty of a blossoming flower, or the small pebbles at the bottom of a stream. A digital detox is like cleaning out the clutter in our brain. Embrace the quiet serenity and uninterrupted moments in nature.

Incorporating Trail Therapy into your Life

So, how do you jump on this Trail Therapy wagon? It’s simple, strap on your hiking shoes, or sneakers, and hit the trail. Use hiking as an addition to your journey to mental health. Hiking isn’t just about the scenic views and fresh air, but about the boost for your mind, body and soul.

Choosing the Right Trail

Choosing the right trail is like picking the right playlist for your mood- it sets the tone of your entire experience. If you are new to hiking, start small. Opt for shorter and less challenging hikes. Think of it as an introduction to nature.

Gradual Progression

As you get more comfortable and confident on the trail, its time to level up. Gradual progression is your greatest friend in hiking. Pick trails that align with your fitness level and gradually increase the length and level of difficulty. Its not a race, its a journey. As you navigate your way in nature, you will grow stronger physically and mentally.

Conclusion: Trail Therapy, FTW

Trail Therapy is a game-changer. It’s not just about physical exercise; it’s about embracing the healing power of nature, one step at a time. I can vouch for it – hiking has been my trusty sidekick in the journey of healing. So, lace up those boots, breathe in the crisp air, and let the trail be your therapist. Trust me; it’s a journey worth taking!
