If you’re anything like me, all of your favorite hobbies are outdoors. I love hiking, kayaking and just being outside. This really puts a damper on things when the temperatures dip below freezing. It’s no secret that I’m a summer girl. I love beaches, suntans and even the humidity. But even though winter isn’t my favorite, I still make sure to get out and enjoy the outdoors! Join me as I explore some of the coolest (literally) hiking trails in Maryland.

The iconic Red Trail covered in snow at Calvert Cliffs State Park, MD

Calvert Cliffs State Park: Maryland’s Coastal Winter Wonderland

Calvert Cliffs brings all of the coastal vibes. The trail to the iconic beach is only 3 miles roundtrip, so this hike can be done in half a day. When I was here, I was lucky enough to see freshly fallen snow on the trees. The snow covered branches created a canopy along the trail, which was pure winter magic. The views of a frosty Chesapeake Bay and its sandy shores are unmatched. You’ve gotta see the marshes completely frozen, with cattails sticking out of the icy landscape. Its a coastal winter paradise.

Maryland Heights: Hike to Epic Winter Panoramas

Maryland Heights is known for its panoramic views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Imagine seeing this incredible view covered in a blanket of snow. The 5 mile hike to the overlook takes you through rocky terrain and rewards you with breathtaking views of the town below. This view is like a postcard. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one.

Weverton Cliffs: Appalachian Trail Winter

For those craving a little AT action in the winter, look no further than Weverton Cliffs. This short 1.8 mile trail offers a huge payoff, so it’s basically the perfect hike. The iconic view from the overlook is the quintessential winterscape, even including a freight train. I hiked up here on Christmas Day and watched the trains go by from above. It was a magical winter experience.

Swallow Falls State Park: Maryland’s Winter Waterfalls

Swallow Falls is one of Maryland’s most popular destinations in summer, but it’s equally, if not more, beautiful in winter. The easy 1 mile trail will take you through snow-covered pines and along a frosty river. If a winter waterfall is on your bucket list, you can’t miss this place.

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge: Winter in Maryland’s Marshlands

Head out to the eastern shore to explore this Wildlife Refuge in winter. The 4 mile wildlife trail loop will take you through sky-high pine trees and along a frozen lake. Even in winter, you can see lots of wildlife here, including deer, bald eagles and waterfowl. This place is a peaceful retreat that will make you forget how cold you are.

Winter hiking in Maryland: Weather & Road Conditions:

A great winter hike always starts with a prepared winter hiker. Let’s talk about logistics. Maryland’s winter fluctuates between 25F and 48F. It’s not the arctic, but it’s cold enough to need a cup of hot cocoa afterward. Snow is always possible. Sometimes it’s just a light dusting, but we have been known to get big storms with multiple feet of snow. Keep in mind that the Eastern shore and lowlands will be slightly warmer and less snow. While the mountainous western Maryland will be much colder and lots more snow. Rain may also be possible, too. So check the weather before heading out to hike!

Must-have Winter Hiking Gear:

Before you head out, let’s talk gear. As a self-proclaimed summer girl, I can attest to the fact that the right gear can make all the difference on winter hikes.

Warm hat- Don’t let your heat escape. Cover your head and ears with a thick, fleece lined hat. It’s a must-have in the cold.

Light layers- Winter weather can be so unpredictable. It’s important to be warm, but you don’t want to be too warm. Dress in layers so you can adjust your outfit as you warm up. Start with a moisture- wicking base layer and add a waterproof outer layer to your wardrobe. You wont regret it!

Chapstick- Cold winds can be ruthless on your lips. Keep a trusty lip balm handy to prevent dreaded chapped lips.

Crampons- These are a secret weapon for winter hiking. These essential additions will give you traction on icy and snowy trails.

Hand warmer- I started using a rechargeable hand warmer a couple years ago and Ill never go back! I have 2- one in each pocket. When my hands get cold from taking all the photos with my phone, I tuck them in my warm pockets for a welcome respite.

Gaiters- I love using gaiters because they are so darn useful. Wear them around your neck as a scarf or around your head as a headband. When the winter winds get too much, I pull my gaiter up around my face to protect my frozen skin.

Wool socks- A really good pair of wool socks will change your winter life forever. A good blend like Merino wool will also wick sweat. Wool socks are the perfect way to cover your feet on a winter hike. Try these from Dickies– they are my favorite for all seasons!
