I’m fully convinced that hiking is the perfect activity for busy, motivated, growth-oriented adults. There are so many rewards, benefits and awe inspiring moments. No other sport or hobby can come close to the mental and physical aspects of it. And the views are the best part. The act of hiking consists of setting goals and achieving them. As you continuously hit these goals, the mental benefits will improve every aspect of your life.

My Personal Growth Story
Growing up, I was plagued with self-doubt and insecurity. The fear of failure was so real that I often avoided taking risking and chasing my dreams. I thought “I’m probably going to fail, so why bother?”
I vividly remember my first solo hike. It was a somewhat popular trail in Shenandoah National Park- a trail I had hiked many times before. This time, however, I was trekking alone. I remember having a sense of liberation on that hike. I felt like I was shedding the weight of my self-doubt.
With each new hike, I found myself gaining confidence and resilience. I was climbing steep inclines, and hiking on rugged terrain. With each struggle, I gained physical strength, but more importantly, I gained a feeling of confidence that would benefit me in all aspects of my life.
My Early Days of Hiking
In those early days, I didn’t realize just how beneficial it would be for me. I discovered that hiking improves all aspects of your life. Each trail is a new challenge, and each peak is a goal. When you constantly hit these small goals, it changes your brain. It proves that you can do hard things, it gives you a sense of control and that momentum continues in every aspect of your life. How Hiking Empowers Me to Overcome Challenges
When you reach the summit, you prove to yourself that you can do hard things. On the way up a mountain, I can hear the voices in my head telling me that I can’t do it. Its the same voices that I hear in my everyday life telling me that I’m not good enough. Hiking has taught me to ignore those negative thoughts. I have proved to myself, time after time, that I can do it. Each time that I make it to the summit, I feel like I can accomplish anything. The next time you have a challenge that seems insurmountable, you will know that you can overcome it.

The Impact of Setting and Achieving Small Goals
Each trail is a new challenge and each peak is a new goal. Some people think that setting huge audacious goals is the best way to achieve things, and they may be right. But also, small goals make a huge impact on your confidence. Achieving these small goals, time after time, grants you a sense of control over your life. As you set your goals, and see them achieved, you become the master of your destiny. This feeling of autonomy can be incredibly empowering, reducing feelings of helplessness.
How Hiking Teaches Us to Conquer Goals with Perseverance
Each journey begins with a single step. I’m sure you’ve heard this quote by Lao Tzu. This is true in life, and its true while hiking. When we set big goals for ourselves, we feel that the end is so far ahead. Its daunting to think of the summit 5 miles away. Hiking teaches us that each summit is reached one step at a time. If you continuously put one foot in front of the other, you will reach the end. Knowing this truth will make you more willing to take on large goals. You will be less stressed when diving into work. This will improve your overall wellbeing.
Momentum and Positive Feedback to Achieve Success
When I reach a new peak, I’m always excited for the next challenge. As we constantly hit our small goals, each new one seems less intimidating. Each goal acts as a stepping stone to the next. This momentum will propel you forward in life, making it easier to tackle more ambitious goals. Your brain begins to associate effort with reward, creating a positive feedback loop. This will keep you moving towards success in all aspects of life.

Conclusion
When I started hiking, I didn’t realize I would be improving my mental strength along with physical strength. Achieving these small goals in each peak has resulted in a more successful and fulfilling life. The next time you’re faced with a daunting task, remember the transformative power of hiking. Remind yourself that you can do hard things. Reduce overwhelm and increase momentum by reaching a new peak. Your mental well-being will thank you as you learn to achieve one small triumph at a time.
